Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Matthew Shealy

Methodist Falls 3–1 at Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga.  On the second day of back–to–back matches for the Methodist men's soccer team, the Monarchs trailed the Piedmont University Lions 1–0 at the halfway mark. After conceding another goal early in the second half, the Monarchs found the Piedmont lead to be too much to overcome.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Piedmont def. Methodist, 3-1
Records: Methodist 3-2-2, Piedmont 2-2-0
Location: Walker Athletic Complex; Demorest, Georgia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With the Monarchs down a top defender in Garrett Panos (who was issued a red card late in Friday's match versus LaGrange), the Methodist back line looked a little different on Saturday. In the 17th minute, an errant pass by the Monarchs resulted in a turnover, setting the Lions up for a goal in transition. Methodist goalkeeper Trey Gohr made three more saves in the first half to hold the score at 1–0 through 45 minutes of play.
  • An own goal by the Monarchs within the first three minutes of the second half made the score a two–goal difference.
  • In the 56th minute, a foul on Josh Mott gave the junior a penalty kick opportunity, which he was able to convert to pull the Monarchs within one. However, a goal for Piedmont in the 82nd minute put the game on ice.
NUMBERS
  • Mott led the team with three shot attempts, putting all three on target. His goal marks the second time he's scored this season.
  • The Monarchs were awarded just three corner kicks, with no corner opportunities in the second half.
