Methodist Held Off the Board in Draw with Shaw

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist men's soccer hosted Shaw University, a Division II opponent, at Duggins Soccer Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Despite dominating possession and generating many scoring chances, the Monarchs and Bears played to a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes of hard-fought action.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist Tied Shaw, 0-0
Records: Methodist 3-2-3, Shaw 1-2-1
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • From kickoff, the Monarchs looked aggressive, firing off four shots in the opening stages — three on target — but Shaw keeper Joel Goerner Tellez stood firm and kept Methodist off the board.
  • The first half saw more pressure from the home side, but solid defensive work from Shaw and key saves kept the scoreboard clean.
  • In the second half, Methodist turned up the heat, sending 13 more shots toward the goal, but none could find the back of the net.
NUMBERS
  • It was a one-sided affair offensively, as Methodist recorded 23 shots, with 14 being on goal, to Shaw's two (one in each half). Sophomore Cameron Lambert and junior Josh Mott each had six shots, with Lambert putting one more on target (4 to 3), for the Monarchs, with sophomore Brogan Murphy not far off, registering three.
  • Senior Matthew Walker and sophomore Josh Shyy each saw action in net for Methodist. Walker started the game and played 74 and a half minutes before Shyy relieved him for the remaining 15 and a half. Neither keeper was forced into a save.
