Monarchs Shine in Singles Play for Season Opener Victory

SALEM, Va.  The Methodist men's tennis team returned to action Wednesday afternoon, traveling to Roanoke College for its first dual match of the season. After the Maroons won the doubles point, the Monarchs took control in singles play, earning five of the six victories across singles to win the match 5–2 at the Elizabeth Campus Courts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
  • Roanoke claimed victory in No. 1 & 2 doubles to secure the early 1–0 lead in the overall match.
  • The lone Methodist pair to win was Hugo Sokk and Jayden Wellman on No. 3 doubles, earning a 6–4 victory over Ben Lawrie and Fergus Larkin.
SINGLES
  • The Monarchs took command in singles action, beginning with Andrew Waddill, who cruised past Batist van Leeuwen 6–1, 6–1 on court No. 6.
  • Aaron Zoubek was next to finish, as he won No. 1 singles 6–2, 6–3 over Luis Henriquez, followed by Harry Crokam at No. 2 with a 6–3, 6–1 win over Emiliano Ramirez.
  • Wellman continued his strong day with a 6–3, 7–5 victory against Nolan Macedo at No. 3 singles. Lincoln Pratt battled back after dropping the opening set 3–6 against Lawrie. Pratt responded with a 6–1 win in the second set before sealing the victory in No. 5 singles with a 10–5 result in the super tiebreaker.
  • The only singles win for the Maroons came at No. 4, with Ethan Tan falling to Edoardo Cazzani in three sets. Tan secured an opening 6–4 set win before Cazzani came back to take the second set 7–5. In the deciding super tiebreaker set, Cazzani edged Tan 12–10 to prevent the singles sweep.

Methodist wraps up its fall schedule November 6–7, when the Monarchs host the Fayetteville Men's Collegiate, their second fall tournament of the season.
