Monarchs Come Up Short In Overtime

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - It was a seesaw back and forth as Cazenovia and Methodist lacrosse teams exchanged goals with the Monarchs tying the game in the final seconds to send it to overtime. Cazenovia scored the game-winner in the first overtime to win 15-14.

The Wildcats (1-0) scored first, but Methodist freshman Danielle Minichello got the Monarchs on the board with her first career goal. Both teams exchanged goals before Cazenovia took the 3-2 lead with 14:37 to go in the half. Methodist then scored the next four goals to lead 6-3, but the Wildcats came back and scored five unanswered goals to close the half with the 8-6 lead.

Methodist came back and opened the second half with three goals to lead 9-8 with 22:51 to go in the game. Cazenovia tied the game at nine but Methodist  went ahead 12-9 with a free position shot from Andrea DiStefano to cap off a three goal run. Cazenovia responded with another five unanswered goals to lead 14-12 with 8:24 to go.  Neither team would score for nearly eight minutes before DiStefano closed the gap to one with a goal with 47 seconds on the clock.  Diane Starrantino got the draw control for Methodist to regain possession and Minichello tried to shovel the ball towards the goal but the shot went wide.  Minichello regained possession and after a Wildcats foul, Jasmine Stephens was awarded a free position shot with nine seconds on the clock.  Stephens converted on the shot attempt to tie the game at 14, sending it into overtime.

Methodist had the first three shots of the first overtime period, but Cazenovia's Christy Foster scored in the final seconds to score what would be the eventual game-winner. Methodist could not muster another shot in the second overtime falling 15-14.

Stephens and DiStefano scored four goals a piece with DiStefano adding an assist. Krystal PoirierAbby Harmon, and Minichello added two goals a piece.

Foster led the Wildcats with five goals and an assist.

Methodist goalkeeper Lindsey Cosgray made 14 saves for the Monarchs while Cari Dwinal had 11 stops for Cazenovia.
