FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist men's tennis team dropped their final regular season match to Christopher Newport 8-1 on Saturday.
Christopher Newport took the lead when
Rob Schmidt and
Dylan Knox lost 8-4 at number two doubles, but the Monarchs' number one doubles team made up of
Matthew Taylor and
Justin Campbell tied it up with an 8-4 win.
Steven Burkett and
Rob Currier fought it out at number three doubles but lost 8-6.
The Captains swept the singles matches to finish off with the win. Taylor lost 6-2, 6-1 at number one and
Brad Tulenko lost 6-1, 6-1 at number five. Burkett dropped the six singles match 6-3, 6-0 and Campbell lost 6-1, 6-2 at number four. Knox lost 6-4, 6-3 at number three. At number two, Schmidt dropped the first set 6-2 but came back and won the second set 4-6 before falling 10-7 in the tiebreaker.
The Monarchs will play in the quarterfinals of the USA South Tournament on Friday at 9 am in Burlington, N.C. The seeding has yet to be finalized but more information will be posted on the
tournament web site.
