FERRUM, Va. - It took eight innings, but Methodist softball won game one 4-3 in a doubleheader over Ferrum before falling 5-4 in game two.
The Monarchs opened up with a run in the first inning when
Crystal Metzger led off with a double to left center.
Caline Daun sacrificed her to third and Metzger scored on
Kayla Talbert's sacrifice fly. Ferrum took the lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-RBI double and led 3-1 in the third on a home run.
Jody Eyler tied the game with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth. Ferrum loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but the Monarchs got out of the inning unscathed sending it to extra inings.
Courtney Blann started out on second and moved to third on a groundout before scoring on a Ferrum error for the eventual game-winning run.
Metzger, Talbert and
Tabatha Stephenson all hit 2-for-4 in the game as
Alex Bass pitched the complete game with seven strikeouts for the win.
Ferrum started the scoring in game two with an unearned run in the first inning.
Cortney Kerns hit a two-RBI single in the second for the Monarchs to take the 2-1 lead.
Darci Martin had a sacrifice fly in the third to increase the Methodist lead but Ferrum tied the game at three with two runs on two hits in fifth. The Monarchs went ahead 4-3 in the sixth when Martin drew the lead off walk and scored on a defensive error. The Panthers came back and put together three hits in the bottom of the seventh to take the 5-4 win.
Talbert and
Sara Poling were 2-for-4 in the game.
Jessica Pridgen pitched five innings giving up five hits while
Jennie Price finished in relief going 1.1 innings.
The Monarchs will host Mary Baldwin on Saturday at 2 pm in a USA South doubleheader.
