FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist came up just short of another late comeback before falling 51-45 to Ferrum in three overtimes.
The Monarchs trailed 21-3 after the first quarter, but used a strong fourth quarter to tie the game at 31 at the end of regulation. Both teams scored a touchdown in each of the two first overtime possessions, but Ferrum shut down the Monarch offense in their third attempt to finish with the win.
Ferrum scored on their first possession of the game and it looked like the Monarchs would return the favor but a Panther sack on third down forcing Methodist to settle for Mosko's 34-yard field goal.
Ferrum added two touchdowns in the first quarter on 93 yards rushing. A field goal early in the second quarter gave the Panthers the 24-3 lead, but Methodist came back with a 61-yard drive finishing on a 13-yard touchdown run from
John Flanagan to cut the lead to 14.
Methodist had another chance to score late in the half advancing to the Ferrum 10-yard line, but the Monarchs came up short on fourth and three turning the ball over on downs. Ferrum held on to the 24-10 lead at halftime.
Methodist came out strong to start the second half and Flanagan scored his second touchdown of the day with a seven yard run. Ferrum quarterback Marcus Mayo scored on an 85-yard punt return to extend the Panthers' lead to 31-17. The Monarchs recovered a Ferrum fumble late in the third quarter, but after reaching Ferrum's 21-yard line, Mosko's 38-yard field goal attempt missed wide left.
On the Monarchs' second possession of the fourth quarter, Methodist put together an 80-yard drive capped off by a 24-yard touchdown run by quarterback
John Glenn. Mosko's extra point cut the lead to seven with 6:23 left to play. The Methodist defense forced Ferrum to three and out and the Monarchs drove back into Panther territory. Glenn connected with
Vaughn Cross for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Mosko's extra point with 1:27 to play tied the game at 31.
Ferrum drove right back down the field driving inside the Methodist 10-yard line. The Monarchs' defense held the Panthers out of the end zone, but Ferrum had an 19-yard field goal attempt with eight seconds on the clock.
Quincy Dudley blocked the kick to send the game into overtime.
Ferrum took possession first and scored on two plays with Mayo scoring on an 8-yard drive. Scott Puschell converted the extra point and Methodist took over on the 25-yard line. Glenn picked up a yard on a pass to
Jonathon Strickland before scoring on a 24-yard pass to
Adam Thomas. Methodist got the ball back and put together another drive for Strickland to finish with a five yard touchdown run. Mosko's kick gave Methodist the 45-38 lead.
The Panthers responded with a touchdown of their own forcing a third overtime. Ferrum regained possession and scored to go ahead 51-45. Forced to go for the two-point conversion, Mayo's pass attempt failed. Glenn picked up 19 yards on passes to
Jason Talbert and
Anthony Autry, but a missed snap sent the Monarchs back to the 29-yard line. The Monarchs bounced back and Glenn scrambled for six yards of his own and connected with Talbert to reach the seven-yard line, but the final attempt came up short for Ferrum to hold on for the 51-45 win.
Glenn finished 29-for-46 for 331 yards passing. Flanagan ran for 65 yards and two touchdowns while
