NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The nationally ranked Christopher Newport Captains took a step closer to the USA South Championship by knocking out the Monarchs 0-3 (11-25, 16-25, 18-25) on Friday night.

CNU opened up a 10-2 lead in the first set and cruised to the 25-11 win. The second set was back and forth with Methodist holding an 11-10 advantage. The Captains went on a 3-13 run to take control and finish with the 16-25 win. The Monarchs recovered from a six point deficit in the third set to close the gap to three at 18-21, but Christopher Newport scored the next four points to earn the 18-25 win.

Jalesty Washington led the team with 11 kills while Lauren Bramble finished with nine. Kayci Miller dished out 23 assists and Hillary McPhatter paced the team with 13 digs.

Christopher Newport advances to the USA South Tournament Championship against third seeded N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday.
