GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Methodist women's tennis team kept up their winning ways at Southwestern University with a 5-4 win over the Pirates.
The Monarchs had great volleys during doubles, but found themselves trailing 2-1 heading into singles. Southwestern won the first match when
Rachel Purser and
Dana Powell lost 8-3 at number two.
Kaitlin Flaherty and
Katherine Meindl came back to tie it at one with an 8-4 win at number one doubles.
Jennifer Hamel and
Heather Brayton lost 8-3 at number three.
Methodist built a strong comeback during singles. Brayton lost 6-1, 6-0 at number four before Powell used her killer forehand to win 6-4, 6-3 at number five.
Kelli Shelton won her fourth straight singles match 6-4, 6-4 at number six thanks to her consistent ground strokes. Meindl gave the Monarchs the 4-3 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Flaherty clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win at number one singles. Purser forced a super tiebreaker before falling 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.
The Monarchs will play their final match in Texas at Austin College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
