NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Methodist men's tennis team earned a 9-0 shutout over Virginia Wesleyan Saturday morning before dropping a 9-0 match to Christopher Newport.
In the first match of the day, Methodist rolled through the Marlins for their ninth win of the season.
Matthew Taylor and
Robert Clayton won 8-2 at number one doubles while
Reid Baker and
Steven Burkett won 8-3 at number two.
Steve Strawn and
Ricky Aybar won by default at number three.
Clayton picked up a default win at number one singles and
Warren Robinson won 6-4, 6-3 at number two.
Eric Smith won 6-1, 6-0 at number three and Burkett picked up the 6-1, 6-2 win at number four. #Strawn won 6-7, 6-1, 10-7 at number five and Aybar won 6-0, 6-0 at number six.
Clayton and Taylor battled to an 8-6 loss at number one doubles against CNU. Aybar and Strawn lost 8-5 while Baker and Burkett lost 8-4 at number two.
Taylor lost 6-1, 6-1 at number one singles while Clayton lost 6-2, 6-2. Baker lost 6-1, 6-0 at number three while Robinson played a tight match at number four before falling 7-6 (7-1), 6-3. Smith lost 6-1, 6-1 at number five and Burkett lost 6-0, 7-5 at number six.
The Monarchs will play at Averett on Sunday in a rescheduled match from earlier this season.
