DANVILLE, Va. - The Methodist men's tennis team dropped a close 5-4 match to Averett in the regular season finale Sunday.
Averett took the 2-1 lead after doubles winning one and two doubles.
Matthew Taylor and
Robert Clayton lost 8-2 and
Reid Baker and
Steven Burkett lost 8-1.
Ricky Aybar and
Steve Strawn picked up the 8-0 shutout at number three.
Methodist earned three singles wins before coming short in the third set twice down the stretch. Taylor won 6-2, 6-3 at number one while Clayton lost 6-0, 6-3 at number two. Baker lost 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 at number three and
Warren Robinson lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at number four.
Eric Smith won 6-2, 6-0 at number five and Burkett earned the 6-0, 6-1 win at number six.
The Monarchs finished as the fourth seed in the USA South Tournament and will take on #5 Greensboro on Friday at 1 p.m. in the first round of the tourney.
