Mary Washington Outlasts York

Will Wright hit 2-for-5 for the day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Mary Washington outlasted York in the final game of the first day of the 2010 NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional.

York took the early lead in the top of the first after Dustin Worthman was hit by a pitch to start the game. Kyle Cook singled to move Worthman to third and Rick Shumway hit the sacrifice fly to drive in the first run of the game.

Jackson Clement doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the second and tied the game at one after Sintino Rosanova reached on an error. The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with another unearned run when Seamus Bergen reached on an error and scored on a double by Eric Rehbein.

Mary Washington went ahead 5-1 in the seventh with three runs on four hits while capitalizing on a York error. Bergen started the rally while Will Wright, Alex Howell and Clement picked up RBI.

York rallied in the eighth with three runs on four hits of their own. Worthman sparked another offensive attack with a lead-off single. The Spartans opened with three singles and scored their third run on a single from Steve Tretter to cut the Eagles' lead to one.

The Spartans tied the game in the ninth. Matt Monti led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Kyle Cook hit a RBI single with two outs and two strikes for Monti to score the the tying run.

Mary Washington came right back and loaded the bases in the ninth on a hit by pinch allowing Clement to hit the game-winning RBI single to right field for the 6-5 win.

Clement led the Eagles hitting 3-for-5 with two RBI. Will Wright was 2-for-5.

Cook hit 3-for-4 for York with five different players tallying a RBI for the Spartans.

Rehbein went 7.2 innings on the mound scattering seven hits. Ryan Engelking finished 1.1 innings of relief to earn the win.

Jason Christenberry took the loss in eight innings.

York will take on Shenandoah on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and Mary Washington will face LaGrange at 6 pm.
