FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Shenandoah took the early 6-0 lead but Salisbury battled back to within two runs before the Hornets finished up with the 6-4 win to claim their second consecutive 2010 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.
Trailing 6-3 heading into the ninth, Salisbury scored one in the ninth before loading the bases, but Shenandoah's Kyle Scallion finished with a strikeout to preserve the 6-4 win.
After a scoreless first inning, Shenandoah's Cory Nelson hit a three-run home run to left field to give the Hornets the early lead. Greg Van Sickler and Scott Van Dusseldorp set up the bases with two singles to start the inning.
The Hornet's Kevin Brashears led off with the third with a walk and moved to second on Jon Holcomb's sacrifice. Jesse Henry singled to score Brashears and then scored on a single from Van Dusseldorp for the 5-0 lead.
Shenandoah added their sixth run in the fourth when Keaton Neeb reached on an error and scored while Brashears baited the defense with an attempted steal to second.
Vince Claudio earned his third win of the season after pitching six and two thirds innings with six strikeouts. Bobby Stefanowicz and Bryce Sears entered in relief before Kyle Scallion finished the final two innings of work.
Kyle Starr went five innings for Salisbury while Andrew Levy and Drew Baldwin closed out for the Sea Gulls.
Nelson and Van Dusseldorp finished 2-for-4 for the Hornets at the plate.
Tim Kellinger went 3-for-5 for Salisbury.
