FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Salisbury had a slow start at the 2010 NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional, but has turned up the heat to advance to the championship with an 11-1 win over Mary Washington Friday night.
Salisbury has avoided elimination three times now after falling to LaGrange 3-1 in the first round game. The Sea Gulls picked up where they left off earlier in game two loading the bases in the first inning allowing Tim Kellinger the opportunity to hit a grand slam to left field.
Will Evans hit a home run of his own in the fourth to give Salisbury the 5-0 lead and the Sea Gulls rattled off four runs in the fifth capitalizing on three walks and a hit by pitch. Salisbury opened the bottom of the seventh with two walks to set up two additional runs for the 11-0 advantage.
Mary Washington prevented the shutout with a run in the eighth after back-to-back doubles from Eric Rehbein and Will Wright. The Eagles scored two more runs in the inning. Three additional runs in the ninth cut the lead to five, but Salisbury finished with the 11-6 win.
Evans was 2-for-3 with four RBI and Andrew Miller went 2-for-4 for Salisbury.
Wright went 4-for-5 for the Eagles and Rehbein finished 3-for-4.
Nathan Young picked up the win for Salisbury pitching seven innings and giving up nine hits.
Zach Goodwyn earned the loss for Mary Washington.
Salisbury will take on Shenandoah in the championship on Saturday. The game has been moved up to 11 a.m. in hopes of avoiding forecasted precipitation in the area.
