FAYETTEVILLE, NC -  Susan Martin has been selected to receive the Mason Sykes Cup for the third year in a row. She is the first student-athlete to be honored three times in the history of the award.

The Sykes Cup, named after former Methodist coach and current employee Mason Sykes, is awarded to the top athlete of the year.  Based on outstanding athletic achievement, a minimum 2.0 grade point average and good character, the Methodist coaching staff has selected an annual winner since 1986.

"It really means a lot to essentially be named the Methodist student-athlete of the year three times during my career," Martin said. "I didn't expect to win it once, let alone three times. I'm honored to be the first to receive the Sykes Cup three times when so many talented athletes have played for Methodist."

Martin recently finished her career as the 2010 Division III Player of the Year earning First Team All-American honors from the National Golf Coaches Association. A native of Norcross, Ga., she averaged 77.9 strokes this year helping the team to its 13th consecutive national championship. Martin was also named a Methodist Senior Scholar Athlete and a USA South Academic All-Conference honoree.

The Sykes Cup will be presented at the fall convocation ceremony on Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. in Reeves Auditorium.
