Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Both teams battled for 66 minutes before the Monarchs outlasted Randolph 17-16 in overtime. Methodist head coach Dennis Cox earned his first career win as head coach.
Randolph (0-2) scored the first two goals, but Methodist came back and tied the game at 2-2 with goals from
Brittany St. Jacques and
Jasmine Stephens. There were five ties during the first half alone. Methodist held the lead briefly at 6-5, but the Wildcats closed the half with two goals to lead 7-6.
Randolph led by three goals on two different occasions at 9-6 and 12-9, but Methodist kept battling back. The Monarchs'
Arianna Earle and
Hope Motahari scored two free position shots to move within one at 12-11, but Randolph regained a two goal lead with 11:25 remaining. With 3:33 left, the Wildcats had the 14-12 advantage before the Monarchs scored three straight goals.
Jessie Earp, St. Jacques and Stephens scored three in the span of one minute and 20 seconds tolead 15-14 with 1:01 left in the game. Randolph picked up the ensuing draw and drove down for the quick game-tying goal. Methodist had one final shot in regulation, but Randolph goalkeeper Samantha Fagone made the save.
Overtime features two three-minute overtime periods and both teams scored one apiece in the first period. In the final overtime, Motahari grabbed the initial draw and drove in for the goal in the first 11 seconds. The Monarchs regained possession and tried to run the clock out before a turnover gave the ball back to Randolph. Methodist regained possession briefly, but the Wildcats had a final shot attempt with 25 seconds left when the Monarchs' goalkeeper
Catharine Savage had a huge save as Metohdist prevailed with the 17-16 win.
Stephens had a big day with eight goals for Methodist while St. Jacques had five goals and Motahari had two. Earp and Earle added one apiece.
Savage finished with 11 saves and Fagone made 20 stops for Randolph.
Methodist will take the road this weekend when they travel to Georgia for games at LaGrange and Agnes Scott Friday and Saturday.
