BURLINGTON, N.C. - The Methodist women's team sought revenge over N.C. Wesleyan College and prevailed 5-4 in the USA South Tournament semifinal. Just five days ago, the Bishops defeated the Monarchs 6-3 to force a three-way tie for first in the regular season, but Methodist came through on Saturday.
On Monday, Methodist was trailing 2-1 after doubles, but turned the tables in the semifinal taking all three matches.
Rachel Purser and
Dana Powell set the tone with a 8-5 win at number two and
Stacey Brooks and
Kelli Shelton won 8-2 at number three.
Katherine Meindl and
Laura Baker gave the Monarchs the 3-0 lead with a 8-5 win at number one.
Shelton put Methodist up 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at number five singles, but N.C. Wesleyan came back to win two matches.
Emily Talley lost 6-3, 6-1 at number six and Purser lost 7-5, 6-2 at number two. Baker clinched the Monarchs' win with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 win at number three. Powell lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at number four and Meindl lost 6-3, 2-6, 4-3 at number one.
With the win, Methodist advances to face top-seeded Meredith College in the USA South Tournament Championship Sunday at 10 a.m.
