FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team wrapped up their home schedule on Saturday in a doubleheader against Emory. The Eagles took the first game 11-8, but Methodist came back to earn an 11-7 win in game two.
Emory jumped out to the quick 5-0 lead and the Monarchs could never catch up. Methodist put together a run in the third and two in the fourth, but after the Eagles scored four in the sixth to lead 10-3, the Monarchs still rallied late. Emory led 11-3 going into the bottom of the eighth.
Trey Such drew a walk and
Brandon Thigpen doubled before Such scored on a wild pitch.
Steven Kirby singled to center to score Thigpen. Methodist continued the rally in the ninth taking advantage of three walks along with singles from
Josh Stott and
Matt Quick to score three runs and cut the lead to three. The Eagles got out of the jam to secure the 11-8 win.
Kirby finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Thigpen went 2-for-3 and Quick was 2-for-5 in the game.
Chris Perry went five innings on the mound scattering six hits with eight strikeouts.
Dylan Moore,
Josh Clarke,
Reid Berry and
Chris Barger finished in relief.
The Monarchs scored first in game two with a run in the first on Such's RBI single. Emory evened the score in the third, but Methodist went ahead 2-1 on Thigpen's solo home run to right field in the fourth. The Eagles took their first lead of the game in the fifth with two runs, but Methodist bounced back with three in the fifth and five runs in the sixth to lead 10-3. Both teams scored a run in the eighth and Emory tried a rally of their own in the ninth with three runs, but it was Methodist who got out of a jam to take the 11-7 win.
Tyler Younger went 3-for-5 in the game with a RBI.
Cody Molosky, Such, Thigpen and
Chris Power finished with two hits apiece.
Rett Lee and
Michael Judge pitched two innings each.
Andrew Womble went three innings with two strikeouts to earn the win.
Josh Ayers and
Rusty White finished in relief.
Methodist recognized seniors
Matt Quick,
Trey Such and
Rusty White in their final home game prior to the first pitch. All three players have been instrumental in the Monarchs' success during their careers.
The Monarchs will host the alumni next Saturday before wrapping up the season on the road May 7-8.
