NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport dealt the Methodist men their first conference loss of the season with a 7-2 defeat on Saturday.
The Captains took the 2-1 lead after doubles after winning the first and second matches.
Duncan Miller and
Hans Baumstark lost 8-1 at number one and
Robert Clayton and
Greg Patterson lost 8-1 at number two.
Lawrence Salmon and
Austin Wang earned the 8-5 win at number three doubles.
Salmon earned the three set victory at number six singles 6-1, 2-6, 7-5. Miller lost 6-1, 6-1 at number one and Baumstark lost 6-3, 6-0 at number two. Patterson lost 6-4, 7-5 at number three and Wang lost 6-4, 6-4 at number four.
Dillon Sullivan lost 6-1, 6-3 at number five.
Methodist will be back in action on Monday when they resume their match with N.C. Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount at 3:30 p.m. N.C. Wesleyan leads the USA South with a 5-0 record. WIth a win the Monarchs could tie for first and earn the No. 1 seed based on head-to-head competition. Should the Bishops win, Methodist would tie for second with CNU and earn the No. 3 seed based on head-to-head.
