Monarch Women's Lacrosse Falls to Piedmont, 17-5

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist women's lacrosse team fell, 17-5, to Piedmont on Saturday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.
 
MU (0-5) started quickly, taking a 1-0 lead 57 seconds into the game on Hope Motahari's unassisted goal, her 10th of the year. Kayla Freund got Piedmont (7-0) on the board at 27:48 when she tied the game at 1-1 with an unassisted goal of her own.
 
Motahari put the Monarchs back on top at 2-1 when Cassie Walter fed her for a goal at the 25:18 mark. However, the Lions scored the game's next 11 goals, including a run of six tallies in a 6:46 stretch, to take a 12-2 lead on Megan McDowell's unassisted tally at the 4:48 mark.
 
Motahari snapped the Lions run with another unassisted goal, this one at the 2:10 mark to pull the Monarchs to within 12-3 before Piedmont scored twice more before the break to take a 14-3 lead into halftime.
 
The Lions opened the scoring in the second half when Samantha Vanover scored off a feed from Elaine Rossignol with 25:35 left to play before Motahari scored once again, this time off a feed from Jessie Earp, with 12:15 to play to make it a 15-4 game.
 
Piedmont added two more goals down the stretch and Walter fed Motahari for the game's final goal with 27 seconds remaining.
 
Ashley Cannon played all 60:00 in goal for the Monarchs and made seven saves on the day. Carly Haraka also played the entire game in the cage for Piedmont and came up with two saves on the day.
 
In addition to her five goals, Motahari added five ground balls and claimed four draw controls. Morgan Artis also had five ground balls and Walter added three while chipping in three caused turnovers.
 
Kayla Freund led the Lions with five points on five goals and added four ground balls. McDowell (3g, 1a) and Alexis Narducci (2g, 2a) tallied four points apiece and Cahner Manns and Maggie McDaniel came away with eight draw controls apiece. McDaniel also contributed three goals and four ground balls.
 
The Monarchs are back in action tomorrow when they host LaGrange at 2:00 pm.
