Cassie Walter totaled 10 points and the Methodist women's lacrosse team posted a 13-5 win over N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.
Walter tallied six goals to go with four assists and
Hope Motahari added four goals as MU (1-6, 1-3) snapped a six-game losing streak. N.C. Wesleyan falls to 0-7 on the year and 0-4 in the USA South.
The Monarchs opened the scoring with two unanswered goals, the first an unassisted tally by
Jessie Earp at the 24:57 mark and the second a Walter to Motahari connection at the 23:18 mark for a 2-0 lead. Connor Wright pulled the Bishops to within 2-1 with an unassisted goal at the 21:56 mark before Walter scored her first goal for a 3-1 lead with 21:02 showing on the clock.
After Laine Hicks tallied for NCWC to make it 3-2, the Monarchs rattled off three straight goals, including two by Walter to go up 6-2 at the 9:57 mark. Jade Gold stopped the Monarchs' run with an unassisted goal at the 9:13 mark, but Walter found Motahari for two more goals before the end of the half as MU went in to the break up 8-3.
N.C. Wesleyan scored the first goal of the second half to pull within four at 8-4, but Walter tallied a pair of free position goals and
Mary Tiger added one in a six minute span to go up 11-4 as the Monarchs cruised to the win.
Ashley Cannon earned her first career win in goal, playing all 60:00 and coming up with five saves on the day. Marissa Santos played all 60:00 in the cage for the N.C. Wesleyan and made six saves.
In addition to her 10 points, Walter added three draw controls and a pair of ground balls.
Morgan Artis grabbed a team-high ground balls and Motahari picked up four draw controls and three ground balls.
Five different players scored for the Battling Bishops. Haley Hopkin came up with four draw controls and Gold, Hicks, Tikeyah Shaw and Santos all had two ground balls.
The Monarchs are back in action on Saturday when they play at No. 16 Christopher Newport at 3:00 pm.
