Ferrum Defeats Methodist, 21-5, in Women's Lacrosse

Box Score FERRUM, Va. -- The Methodist women's lacrosse team dropped a 21-5 contest at Ferrum on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Panthers scored the first six goals of the game en route to a 15-2 lead at the half in securing its fifth consecutive win to move to 11-4 on the season and 5-1 in league play. The Monarchs fell to 1-8 overall and 1-5 in the USA South.
 
Sydney Hewartson opened the scoring for the Panthers 27 seconds into the game, scoring off a feed from Caila Cummings for a 1-0 lead at the 29:33 mark. Brooke Hewartson scored an unassisted goal just under two minutes later for a 2-0 lead before Cummings scored back-to-back goals for a 4-0 lead with 23:09 on the clock.
 
Hope Motahari got the Monarchs on the board with an unassisted goal at the 17:17 mark to make it a 6-1 game, but FC reeled off eight straight goals, including four by Brooke Hewartson to assume a 14-1 lead 2:36 before the halftime break. Motahari and Cummings each tallied unassisted goals before the end of the first half to account for the 15-2 score.
 
Methodist scored two of the first three goals of the second period, unassisted tallies by Motahari and Cassie Walter, to pull the Monarchs within 12 at 16-4. However, Ferrum countered with five goals before Zhane' Ruffin scored the game's final goal with 3:09 to play to cap the scoring.
 
Ashley Cannon started in goal for the Monarchs and made 10 saves in 60:00. Amanda Cheney started in the cage for the Panthers and played the first 48:11, allowing four goals and making five saves. Brianna Sugartan played the final 11:49 in the cage.

In addition to her three goals, Motahari added five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Walter added a pair of ground balls as well.

Brooke Hewartson led the Panthers with eight goals and an assist. Cummings added five goals and an assist and Sydney Hewartson registered a pair of goals and six assists. Lauren Blankenship and Briana Baird each picked up ground balls, and Cummings and Brooke Hewartson totaled 12 and seven draw controls, respectively.
 
Methodist is back in action on Friday at Greensboro at 1:00 pm.
