ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Methodist men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaking 5-4 decision to Christopher Newport in the semifinal round of the USA South Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Monarchs and Captains were all tied at 4-4 as the match came down to MU's
Greg Patterson and CNU's Joey Manilla at No. 3 singles. Patterson won the first set, 7-6 (7-5) before falling in the second set, 6-4. Manilla then held off Patterson, 6-2, in the third and final set to earn the win.
Methodist had rallied from a 2-1 deficit following doubles play, as Patterson and
Rob Clayton earned the lone Monarch point, defeating Kyle Tobin and Robbie Wagner, 8-6.
In in singles, the Monarchs earned points at Nos. 1 and 2 as
Duncan Miller won 6-4, 6-2 over Chiraag Shetty and
Taylor Buchholz posted a 6-3, 7-6 win over Tobin. CNU earned those two matches back by posting wins at Nos. 4 and 5. Methodist's
Lawrence Salmon's won over Will Sloan at No. 6, 6-2, 6-2.
With the loss, the Monarchs' season ends with an overall record of 17-3.
