Avenging Angels Top Monarchs, 20-7, in Women's Lacrosse

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Meredith College used a 5-0 scoring run over a 7:03 stretch of the first half en route to a 20-7 win over the Methodist women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.
 
After Cassie Walter fed Jessie Earp for a goal at the 15:07 mark of the first half that pulled Methodist (1-10, 1-7 USA South) to within two goals at 5-3, Meredith (5-9, 4-4 USA South) reeled off the game's next five goals to assume a 10-3 lead by the 8:05 mark en route to a 12-4 lead at halftime.
 
Lottie Meadows started the run off a feed from Katie Burnet and Danielle Lee followed with a pair of goals before Burnet ended the run with two goals of her own. Walter and Earp hooked up again for another Monarch goal at the 5:11 mark before the Avenging Angels tallied twice more, including a Meadows goal with two seconds remaining in the half to take an eight-goal lead into intermission.
 
In the second half, Burnet tallied three times in the opening 10 minutes as Meredith extended its lead to 17-4 with 20:34 left to play. Earp added her third goal of the game for the Monarchs and Zhane' Ruffin tallied her second for MU as the two teams played back-and-forth down the stretch. Walter scored the game's final on a free position shot with 1:30 to play.
 
Ashley Cannon played all 60:00 for Methodist and made five saves in goal, while Andie Stuber started and played the duration for the Avenging Angels, making six saves.
 
Walter finished with five points on two goals and three assists while also grabbing four ground balls and two draw controls to lead the Monarchs. Earp had three goals and a ground ball and Morgan Artis added four draw controls and a pair of ground balls.
 
Burnet led Meredith with nine points on eight goals and an assist. Meadows finished with eight points on six goals and two assists and Lee had three goals and a like number of assists. Lee and Eliza Evans each had five ground balls, and Lee led the way with 12 draw controls.
 
Methodist will now wait until April 20 to host its final game of the year when it hosts Chowan at 1:00 pm.
