Randolph Women's Lacrosse Edges MU, 12-9

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist women's lacrosse team saw a second-half rally come up short in falling, 12-9, to Randolph on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Monarchs (1-4) trailed 12-5 with 6:44 left to play but scored the game's final five goals to pull within 12-9 as time expired. Cassie Walter scored her second goal of the game to make it 12-5 with 6:44 on the clock, and Jessie Earp made it 12-6 with an unassisted tally at the 5:38 mark. Walter then found Sareena Coleman for a goal with 5:17 to play that pulled MU within five (12-7) goals.
 
Walter continued to keep pressure on the WildCats (2-1), scoring unassisted at the 1:51 mark to make it 12-8, and she then fed Zhane' Ruffin for the game's final goal with 44 seconds to play before time ultimately ran out on the Monarchs.
 
The late surge was preceded by an 8-0 run by Randolph that turned a 1-1 game into a 9-1 lead for the WildCats with 24:08 to play in the contest. Earp scored unassisted to tie the game at 1-1 with 19:05 left in the first half before Randolph ripped off eight consecutive goals. Taylor Klevenz started the barrage off a feed from Erin Campbell at the 18:13 mark, and RC took a 6-1 lead into the break.
 
In the second half, Klevenz opened the scoring off a feed from Riccardi, then fed Melanie Eisele at the 15:10 mark to make it 8-1. Riccardi capped RC's run with an unassisted goal to make it 9-1 with 24:08 to play. Walter finally ended MU's drought, scoring unassisted at 21:14 to make it 9-2, before the big surge at the end of the game.
 
Methodist actually outshot Randolph, 30-19, but the WildCats' Samantha Fagone came up with 16 saves in the win. Ashley Cannon made four saves in the loss.
 
Walter finished with four goals, two assists and six groundballs for MU. Earp added a pair of goals and five ground balls. Hope Motahari had four draw controls, four caused turnovers and three groundballs.
 
Klevenz had five goals and an assist to lead Randolph. Campbell had two goals and an assist, and Riccardi chipped in a goal, three assists, and four groundballs.
 
Methodist is back on the field on Monday when it hosts Saint Vincent at 3:00 pm.
