Late Surge Lifts Transylvania Women's Lax Over Methodist, 14-13

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Transylvania outscored the Methodist women's lacrosse team, 6-0, over the game's final 13:46 to eke out a 14-13 win over the Monarchs on Saturday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.
 
The Pioneers' (3-1) run came after Methodist had used a 3-0 spurt to turn a 10-8 advantage into a seemingly comfortable 13-8 lead on Jessie Earp's goal with 14:59 to play. Lucy Meredith answered Earp's goal with one of her own at the 13:46 mark, and Sky Spraker made it 13-10 in favor of MU with a goal at the 12:24 mark. Nearly five minutes of game time passed before TU pulled within a pair of goals (13-11) on Rachel Harrison's goal with 7:09 to play. Spraker and Harrison each added free position shots at the 5:54 and 4:12 marks, respectively, to tie the game at 13-13, and Molly Kruse scored the game-winner off a feed from Natalie Hendrix with 3:29 on the clock.
 
Methodist had several chances to tie late, gaining possession on several occasions, but several costly turnovers sealed the Monarchs' fate.
 
To start the game, Methodist and Transylvania traded 4-0 runs as MU assumed an 8-4 lead 54 seconds into the second half. Madison Antor scored a trio of goals and Sareena Coleman added one as MU took a 4-0 lead by the 20:44 mark of the first half. Transylvania came back with a 4-0 run of its own to tie the game at 4-4 by the 14:04 mark behind a pair of goals from Harrison and tallies by Spraker and Hendrix.
 
The Monarchs bounced right back with four more unanswered goals, as Zhane Ruffin and Earp each scored before Cassie Walter scored consecutive goals for an the aforementioned 8-4 lead. MU's lead reached five goals (9-4) courtesy of a Bianca Terenzi unassisted goal with 24:44 left in the contest before Transy began inching back into the contest.
 
Lucy Meredith and Harrison each found the back of the net twice as TU pulled to within 10-8 with 19:01 left to play setting up the games wild finish.
 
Methodist outshot Transylvania, 29-26, picked up more ground balls, 18-15, and committed fewer turnovers, 16-18, but TU won 16 draw controls to 13 for the Monarchs, and the Pioneers converted on 5-of-6 free position shots to just a 2-of-5 mark for MU.
 
Walter finished with six points on four goals and two assists. Earp scored twice and had two assists and Antor finished with three goals. Hope Motahari had five ground balls and three caused turnovers, and Antor led the way with four draw controls.
 
For Transylvania, Harrison had six goals and five ground balls. Spraker and Meredith each had three goals, and Natalie Hendrix had seven draw controls, five ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.
 
Methodist is back on the field on Thursday when it plays at Greensboro at 3:00 pm.
