DANVILLE, Va. -- The Methodist men's tennis won a pair of matches on Friday afternoon, winning at Averett, 8-1, and topping visiting Covenant, 9-0.
 
Against the Cougars (2-4), the Monarchs raced out to a 3-0 lead courtesy of a clean sweep of the three doubles matches, including an 8-0 victory at No. 3 by Michael Jones and Jon Kepcke over David Diaz Julius Noreila.
 
In singles play, Methodist claimed 5-of-6 points, which included a 6-0, 6-0 win by Jones over Diaz at No. 6. At No. 1 singles, John Dangerfield defeated Alexander Terentiev, 6-0, 6-2, and Jacob Groce claimed a victory against Kirill Baranov, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 10-7, at No. 2. Asa Britt won, 6-0, 6-2, against Samu Rasila at No. 4, and Seth Grant won, 6-1, 6-1, over Julius Noreila at No. 5.
 
In their home match against the Scots (1-11), the Monarchs (12-6) did not drop a single set all day long in claiming a 9-0 victory.
 
Methodist will play two more matches tomorrow afternoon as it hosts Maryville and Randolph-Macon. The action is scheduled for 12:30 and 4:00 pm, respectively.
