ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Methodist men's tennis team opened USA South Tournament play with a 9-0 sweep over Ferrum College on Friday afternoon on the campus of N.C. Wesleyan.
The third-seeded Monarchs (18-6) took a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles, dropping just four games along the way, then breezed through singles play to earn the 9-0 win over No. 6 Ferrum
Duncan Miller, the 2014 USA South Men's Tennis Player of the Year, teamed with
Taylor Buchholz for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
Greg Patterson and
John Dangerfield captured an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, and
Dillon Sullivan and
Max Mancini completed the doubles sweep with an 8-0 win at No. 3.
In singles play, Buchholz posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 to give the Monarchs a 4-0 lead, and Patterson clinched the MU victory by posting a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3. Miller won at No. 1 7-6 (6), 6-2, and Sullivan captured a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot.
Rounding out the match, Dangerfield recorded an 8-1 win at No. 5 and Mancini posted at 8-0 win at No. 6.
Methodist will now take part in the semifinal round against No. 2 Huntingdon beginning at 2:00 pm on Saturday.
