Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist baseball team used a three-run seventh to rally its way to a 7-6 victory versus visiting St. Andrews on Wednesday evening at Armstrong-Shelley Field.
Playing in their 2014 home finale, the Monarchs (21-14) found themselves in a 1-0 hole following a Tyler Radcliff leadoff home run on the second pitch of the night. The Knights (25-18) held a 5-3 edge through five complete innings.
Later trailing by a single run at 5-4, MU began to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh.
Stephen Nalls hit a one-out single to right, and
Steven Kirby followed with a single of his own to right-center to advance Nalls to third.
Tyler Hardee plated Nalls with a run-scoring double to left to knot things up at 5-5. Now with runners on second and third and one down,
Pete Wildeboer took advantage of St. Andrews' infield playing in and hit a two-run single through the right side.
Nursing a 7-5 lead in the top of the ninth, Methodist reliever
Josh Ayers gave up a leadoff single to Radcliff, but struck out the next two batters in succession to put the Knights down to their final out.
Patrick Whitecavage drew a base on balls, however, and Michael During drove home Radcliff with a two-out single through the left side to make it a one-run game at 7-6. Following a walk to Michael Luing that loaded the bases, Ayers struck out Kyle Schade swinging to lock down the victory for the Monarchs.
Tyler Hardee went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, a walk and scored once for Methodist. He also threw a scoreless inning on the mound.
Alex Rodriguez stole two bases, and
Chris Power scored a pair of runs.
Michael Judge (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless seventh inning. He worked around a base hit and a walk. Ayers notched his eighth save of the season as he gave up a run on two hits and two walks. He struck out three.
Whitecavage went 2-for-2 with a double, home run and two walks for St. Andrews. In addition to his solo homer, Radcliff scored twice as part of a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Thomas Brown (0-2) took the loss on the mound. In 2.0 innings, he allowed four runs (3 ER) on five hits and struck out four.
The Monarchs will conclude their season with a three-game series at LaGrange this weekend. To kick things off, the two teams play a doubleheader on Saturday in LaGrange, Ga., with first pitch set for 1:00 pm.
