FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist University Department of Athletics announced that football player Max Reber has been named the 2014 winner of the Mason Sykes Cup.

The Sykes Cup, named for former Methodist coach Mason Sykes, is awarded annually to the University's top student-athlete. Based on outstanding athletic achievement, and a minimum grade-point average of 2.0, the Methodist coaching staff has chosen an annual winner every year since 1986.

In his junior season on the gridiron, Reber led the Monarchs to an 8-2 overall record (6-1 USA South) and a share of the USA South Conference Championship. Along the way, he was named the USA South's Offensive Player of the Year, a first team all-conference selection, a d3football.com Second Team All-South pick and a USA South Academic All-Conference honoree. Additionally, the USA South awarded Reber with the Don Scalf Award, given annually to the Conference's most outstanding student-athlete.

The nation's leader in total offense at 364.2 yards per game, Reber finished the 2013 season with 2,998 passing yards and 26 touchdowns against just six interceptions. He completed 209-of-317 passes (.659) and averaged 299.8 passing yards per game. Additionally, he added a team-best 644 yards rushing on 135 carries and scored four touchdowns.

Reber is the programs all-time single-season leader in pass attempts (317), pass completions (209), passing yards (2,998) and passing touchdowns (26). He also holds career records in pass attempts (773), pass completions (453), passing yards (6,174) and passing touchdowns (53), while ranking fourth all-time in rushing attempts (370), seventh in rushing touchdowns (10) and ninth in rushing yards (1,119).
