FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – In its 2016 home-opening match, the Methodist men's tennis team toppled the visiting Scots of Covenant College, 7-1, Saturday afternoon at the Gene Clayton Tennis Center.
In doubles play, R.J. Clement and Teal Howard teamed up at the No. 2 line to earn Methodist's (1-0, 1-0 USAS) first win of the day, an 8-0 victory over Covenant's (0-3, 0-2 USAS) Trey Wood and Connor Shimmel. At No. 3, Seth Grant and Mike Jones picked up an 8-3 win over Travis Hutchinson and Dan Madden and at No. 1, Taylor Buchholz and John Dangerfield fought hard from a 0-3 deficit, but eventually lost, 8-6 to Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox.
Methodist swept in singles play with the first win coming from line No. 3 where Kyle Mersereau defeated Wood, 6-0, 6-1, and then Dangerfield blanked Shimmel, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. Buchholz clinched the match for the Green and Gold, defeating Cox, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2. Next to finish was Howard at No. 5, who picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Madden and then at No. 6, Jacob Groce toppled Hutchinson, 6-0, 6-0. R.J. Clement was the last Monarch to finish, coming out on the winning side of a 7-5, 0-6, 7-6 (7-1) battle at the No. 1 line over Harvie.
The Monarchs will compete again on Feb. 28 as they host Oglethorpe beginning at 12:00 pm.
