ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Methodist men's tennis team won, 8-1, over Averett College on Saturday afternoon in a semifinal match of the 2016 USA South Men's Tennis Conference Tournament held at N.C. Wesleyan.
With the win, the Monarchs (12-5) will compete against regular-season conference champions N.C. Wesleyan on Sunday at 10:00 am.
Methodist picked up three straight wins in doubles play to gain a 3-0 lead over Averett (13-3) heading into singles. At No. 1,
R.J. Clement and
Teal Howard topped Oliver Lindqvist and James Wright, 8-2, before
Michael Jones and
John Dangerfield defeated Carlos Lora and Ariel Prieto, 8-2, at No. 3.
Taylor Buchholz and
Jacob Groce picked up the last win at No. 2, an 8-4 victory over Nicolas Quevedo and Abdugani Ganiev.
After dropping their first singles match, their only loss of the day, and a 6-3, 6-3 win over Alfonso Jimenez by
Max Mancini at No. 6, Buchholz clinched the match for the Monarchs, winning 6-2, 6-2 over Quevedo at No. 2.
Teal Howard battled to a 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 win over Wright at No. 3 before Clement topped Lindqvist, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 1. The day's longest match came from the No. 4 line where Dangerfield emerged victorious, 6-3, 7-6, over Ganiev.
