FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist men's tennis team opened USA South action with a 5-4 victory against Averett on Saturday.
With the win, the Monarchs improve to 4-0 overall with a 1-0 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Cougars fall to 3-2 on the year and start their conference schedule 0-1.
Averett won two of the three matches in doubles competition to take an early 2-1 match lead. The pairing of
Wynn Johnson and
John Dangerfield defeated James Wright and Nicolas Yanes, 8-4, at the second slot, while both Monarch teams at the first and third position dropped their contests 8-3.
In singles action, Dangerfield earned a 6-4, 7-4 win against Yanes at the fifth slot before
Jacob Groce fought to a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory against Carlos Lora at the sixth slot to tie the team score. James Wright defeated Johnson, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, at the third slot, while
R.J. Clement rallied past Caius Blomqvist, who was named USA South Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week on Monday, at first singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Reid Rose sealed the team victory after defeating Nicolas Quevedo 7-5, 7-6 at the fourth position.
The Monarchs return to action tomorrow, March 5, in Hilton Head, South Carolina, against Wilkes beginning at 1 pm.
