Monarchs climb leaderboard at General’s Invite

LEXINGTON, Va.  Methodist's 12th-ranked women's golf team leaped up the leaderboard in Monday's final round of the two-day General's Invite, posting the third-lowest round of 11 teams to finish in third place with a two-day stroke total of 619 (314-305, 43-over par).

The Monarchs closed out Sunday's opening round in a tie for seventh place but vaulted up the leaderboard Monday to pass 15th-ranked Washington & Lee University, No. 17 Sewanee: The University of the South, 24th-ranked Huntingdon College and unranked Christopher Newport University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jillian Drinkard (73-73—146, +2) matched her total from Day 1 and finished in a three-way tie for second place, two strokes behind the winner.
  • Paige Church (T18th, 80-76—156, +12), Peyton Durham (T28th, 82-76—158, +14) and Sarah Sontowski (T38th, 82-80—162, +18) each trimmed strokes on Day 2 and move up the individual leaderboard.
  • Morgan Bowen (79-81—160, +16) began Monday's round with 10 pars out of her first 15 holes and was well on her way to joining the others with upward movement on the leaderboard. But Bowen found a few extra shots on her final three holes to slip into a tie for 33rd place.
  • Drinkard and Durham were steady throughout their rounds Monday, converting par putts on 13 greens apiece. Church was not far behind with 12 par drop-ins.
  • Drinkard pocketed a pair of birdies on her day, at Nos. 8 and 12, as did Sontowski (Nos. 3 and 5). Church converted a birdie putt at No. 1 and Durham converted on No. 18.
  • Methodist's 'B' squad was led by Alexandra Williams (78-83—161, +17) who finished the tournament tied for 35th place.
  • Also, for the 'B' team, Kiersten Van Norden (T49th, 85-82—167, +23) and Mariah Kuranga (57th, 87-85—172, +28) cut three and two strokes, respectively, from their opening rounds.
  • Micah Mason (83-84—167, +23) and Nicole Triano (80-87—167, +23) joined Van Norden in their three-way tie for 49th place.

RANKINGS (WGCA) AND SCORING
  • NYU was in second place by two strokes to start the day, but the seventh-ranked Violets posted the low round on Monday, by seven strokes, and passed first-day leader, eventual runner-up and 16th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University (300-304—604, +28).
  • Other ranked schools participating and their General's Invite results:
    • 4th – Washington and Lee (No. 15), 312-310—622, +46
    • 6th – Sewanee (No. 17), 317-308—625, +49
    • 8th – Huntingdon College (No. 24), 312-322—634, +58

NEXT UP
The Methodist women will travel to Destin, Florida, where they will participate in the Oct. 14-16 Golfweek D-III Fall Invitational at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort-Baytowne Golf Club.
