Williams Leading Monarchs at Southern Shootout

BESSEMER, Ala.  Alexandra Williams sits in second place after the opening round of the Birmingham-Southern College Southern Shootout, posting a 2-over-par 74 Monday at the 5,802-yard, par 72 layout at Bent Brook Golf Course.

Williams and her 10th-ranked (WGCA) teammates from Methodist are tied for fifth place with Berry (Ga.) College on the team leaderboard after the first of two rounds. The Monarchs and Vikings both registered 30-over-par 318s.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Williams was steady as a rock across the Bent Brook layout, rolling in the most par putts, 12, while finishing the day a tournament-best even par on the course's par 4 holes.
  • Twice she followed bogey holes with birdies, only adding a shot each on Nos. 15 and 17.
  • Jillian Drinkard (39-41—80, +8) is tied for 18th place. Usually the par-meister for Methodist she had her ups and downs during the round, totaling three bogeys on the front and five on the back.
  • Three Methodist golfers -- Peyton Durham (41-41—82, +10), Morgan Bowen (42-40, +10) and Paige Church (41-41—82, +10) -- are part of five golfers tied for 28th place.
  • A sixth Monarch, Sarah Sontowski, is participating as an individual and finished the afternoon tied for 22nd place after her 9-over round of 81 (42-39).

UP NEXT
Tuesday's final round at the Shootout is the last round of the regular season for Methodist, which is in consideration for an at-large bid into the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship in Houston, Texas, on May 14-17.
