Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist men's tennis team were back in action on Sunday afternoon for a non-conference match against Johnson & Wales University. JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Johnson & Wales, 8-1
Records: Methodist 1-2, JWU 0-2
Location: Gene Clayton Tennis Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist took all three doubles flights to start the match. Matthew Hurley & Andrew Wood won 8-1 over their opponents and the pairs of Will Belser/Cameron Roth & Evan Kane/Brady Mendler each won by a score of 8-3.
  • In singles play, Hurley defeated Jonathan Millwood in two straight sets (6-1, 6-1) in the battle of the ones. Belser would also win with matching 6-1 set scores over Samuel Wilder in number two singles.
  • Court four saw Wood play against Dylan Hight, where Wood got the better of Hight (6-0, 6-1). Almost similar to teammate Wood, Mendler claimed a 6-0 first set before taking the flight (No. 6) in the second set 6-2 over Wilder Noyes
  • With identical set scores of 6-2, Kane defeated Devonte Hill in flight five. The Monarchs lone loss came from the No. 3 single match between Roth and Sam Cicciarello.
  • Cicciarello took set one, 7-5, before Roth evened up the match with a 6-1 set win. The flight would head to a super tiebreaker that resulted in Cicciarello winning 10-5 over Roth.
UP NEXT
Methodist is off for the next couple of weeks before playing again on March 12, as the Monarchs travel to North Carolina A&T State University. The match is scheduled for a 2 PM start.
