SEWANEE, Tenn. Members of the Methodist men's tennis team competed at the first day of the ITA (International Tennis Association) South Regional Championships on Friday, participating in singles and doubles matches.
In the singles main bracket, sophomore
Matthew Hurley earned a win against Sewanee's George Alexander (6-4, 6-1), then defeated Emory's Sam Dean (6-4, 1-6, 10-7) to advance to the next round.
Sophomore
Wills Belser also competed in the singles main, falling in his first match to Emory's Nolan Shah (6-0, 6-0). Belser moved to the singles main consolation bracket where, after winning the first set, he was narrowly edged out by Centre's Ty Bush (4-6, 6-4, 10-7).
In the doubles main event, Hurley and Belser teamed up to take on Sewanee's Peyton Erck and Gil Weston, falling to the duo by a close score of 8-6. As a result, they'll compete in the doubles main consolation bracket.
In the purple singles bracket, junior transfer
Drew Guarnieri faced off against Covenant's Solomon Crouch in a one-set match to eight. Guarnieri was on the losing side of the 8-4 result, sending him to the purple singles consolation bracket.
In the gold singles bracket, junior
Will Trocchi took on Berry's Bohdan Higley, with Higley taking the match, 8-3. Junior
Hayden Holloway was matched up against Rhodes' Justin Bobo, who defeated Holloway in an 8-3 effort. Both Trocchi and Holloway shift to the gold singles consolation bracket.
In the gold doubles bracket, Guarnieri and Holloway paired up to challenge Birmingham-Southern's Reed Martinson and Ryan Pearlman, who narrowly took the match 8-7 (7-3). Guarnieri and Holloway will play together again in the gold doubles consolation bracket.
Sophomore
Brady Mendler had a bye in the first round of the black singles bracket, then fell to Oglethorpe's Tyler Hymel (6-2, 6-0), pushing Mendler to the consolation bracket. In the black doubles bracket, Mendler and Trocchi were granted a first-round bye and will face their first pair of challengers of Saturday.
The second day of ITA play is underway and will conclude later Saturday evening.
