FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist University is proud to announce the addition of Brett Karpman, who will serve as the institution's Professional Tennis Management Program Coordinator as well as an assistant coach to the men's and women's tennis teams.
Previously, Karpman was the Director of Adult Tennis at Providence Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, and he was a consultant for the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
His last collegiate coaching experience was when he was the head men's and women's tennis coach at Queens University of Charlotte from 2007-15. During his eight-year tenure, Karpman developed both the men's and women's tennis teams into nationally recognized programs, which includes a Royals Men's Team with a national ranking of #29 in the NCAA Division II rankings and his women's program finishing at No. 28 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, during his final season.
In 2010, Karpman led the women to a perfect 17-0 regular season to earn a spot into the NCAAs. The women would again make their way to the NCAA tournament in 2015. For the men, Karpman's leadership found Queens its first-ever Men's Conference Carolinas Championship in 2011 and NCAA appearance. His programs have established new records for the highest winning percentage for each squad with the women at .910 and the men at .833.
In the South Atlantic Conference, Queens grabbed the Female Freshman Tennis Player of the Year Award twice as well as the Female Tennis Player of the Year Award. In just two short years, Queens has had ten players named to the All-Conference Team with eight more receiving honorable mention honors. The women's team worked their way to the conference finals in 2015 while the men found a semifinal matchup.
Under Karpman both teams have flourished on and off the court as the squads have a combined 189-104 record throughout his tenure. Karpman has produced 35 All-Conference selections as well as Freshmen of the Year and Player of the Year honors, along with numerous post-season awards. Karpman has also been selected as the Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year in consecutive seasons (2009-2010 and 2010-2011), an honor voted upon by his peers. Additionally, he was named the Southeast Region's Wilson/ITA Men's Coach of the Year in 2015.
The program's success off the court is manifested through many volunteer opportunities, including the Ronald McDonald House and various other organizations in Charlotte. His teams have earned awards for the athletic program with the highest student-athlete GPAs over the past eight consecutive years. Five members of the tennis team have been awarded the ITA's prestigious Arthur Ashe Leadership Award in the last six years. Only eight are given out every year.
Prior to his position at Queens, he worked as an assistant coach for the tennis team at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) for a season, 2006-07. There, he helped recruit players from around the nation for the UNCW men's tennis team while helping the Seahawks compile their best season in the University's history (14-6 in the CAA). He also helped lead the team to their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since the program's inception.
A native of Montreal, Canada, Karpman received a bachelor's of science degree from Queens in 2006. He was also a member of Queens' varsity tennis program from 2002–04. While playing for the Royals tennis team, he was named a National Presidential Scholar-Athlete and would later serve as a student assistant coach from 2004-2006.
He is certified by the PTR and USPTA as a Level Two Tennis Professional and the PPR as a Pickleball Teaching Professional.
