Monarchs Take Third in Men's Tennis Preseason Poll

2/5/2025 4:05:00 PM

ROME, Ga.  Coming off a third–place regular–season finish in 2024, the Methodist men's tennis team has been voted third in the 2025 USA South Coaches Preseason Poll, which was announced on Wednesday afternoon. The Monarchs garnered 27 points from coaches around the league.

North Carolina Wesleyan University — the reigning champion of the regular season and the conference tournament — was tabbed as the preseason favorite, receiving six first–place votes and a total of 36 points. Closely behind the Battling Bishops and just ahead of Methodist, the Pfeiffer University Falcons earned the remaining first–place vote and tallied 30 points overall.

One spot behind the Monarchs, Brevard College collected 19 points, while Southern Virginia University claimed fifth place with 17 points. William Peace University (12 points) and Mary Baldwin University (6 points) were the final two teams in the poll.

Head coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team in the preseason poll. After serving as interim head coach last season, Scott Handback now sits at the helm for Methodist without an interim tag. Under his leadership in 2024, the Monarchs went 10–7 overall and 4–2 against conference opponents in the regular season. Methodist swept William Peace in the first round of the USA South Tournament, advancing to the semifinal round where the Monarchs narrowly lost to Pfeiffer, 5–4.

The Monarchs begin their season on Feb. 21 when they travel to McDaniel College. Methodist's first USA South match will take place on March 6 when the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin visit Fayetteville.
