ROME, Ga. Following a third–place regular–season finish in 2024, the Methodist women's tennis team has received the third most votes in the 2025 USA South Coaches Preseason Poll, which was announced on Thursday afternoon. The Monarchs totaled 44 points from coaches around the league.
North Carolina Wesleyan University — the defending champion of the regular season and the conference tournament — was picked as the preseason favorite, receiving seven first–place votes and accumulating 56 points in total. With the remaining first–place vote in hand, Southern Virginia University collected 47 points overall, finishing just one spot ahead of the Monarchs in the poll.
Closely following Methodist in fourth, Pfeiffer University amassed 41 points, while Brevard College claimed fifth place with 32 points. The final three spots in the poll were filled by Salem College (22 points), Meredith College (19) and Mary Baldwin University (9).
Head coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team in the preseason poll. Entering her second season as the head coach of the Monarchs,
Alicia Barto delivered a 10–7 overall record while at the helm in 2024, coaching her team to a 6–2 mark against USA South foes in the regular season. As the No. 3 seed, Methodist swept Salem in the first round of the conference tournament, advancing to the semifinal round before falling to Southern Virginia.
The Monarchs begin their season on Feb. 11 when they travel to Barton College. Methodist's first USA South match will take place on March 6 when the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin visit Fayetteville.
