GREENSBORO, N.C.  Methodist men's lacrosse responded in convincing fashion Wednesday night, earning a 13–5 non-conference victory over Guilford College at Appenzeller Field.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Guilford, 13–5
Records: Methodist 1-1, Guilford 0-1
Location: Appenzeller Field; Greensboro, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It took less than two minutes for the Monarchs to strike. Senior J.R. Newman set up sophomore Jay Legg for the opening goal, giving Methodist an early advantage. The Monarchs controlled possession throughout the first quarter, outshooting Guilford 12–2, but were limited to two goals in the frame after freshman Logan Garrett added the second score off an assist from RJ Breeden.
  • Methodist opened the second quarter with another Legg goal before Guilford found the scoreboard. The Monarchs quickly seized control with three unanswered goals. Nick Spinola scored back-to-back tallies, and Jay Moore followed with a goal to extend the lead to 6–1. Breeden added another late in the half as Methodist carried a 7–2 advantage into the break.
  • Both teams traded goals in the third quarter, with Newman accounting for both Monarch scores to push the lead to 9–4 heading into the final period.
  • Methodist put the game away in the fourth. The Monarchs outscored the Quakers 4–1 in the final 15 minutes, highlighted by two more goals from Spinola to cap a career night. Breeden and Logan Florio also found the back of the net as Methodist closed out the decisive road win.
FAST FACTS
  • Spinola led the Monarch offense with a career-high four goals. Breeden, Legg, and Newman each recorded multiple goals in the balanced attack.
  • Freshman Cole Rigsbee earned his first collegiate victory in net, finishing with eight saves while allowing four goals.
  • Defensively, Methodist caused 20 Guilford turnovers. Sophomore LJ Oby matched a career-high with four caused turnovers, while Legg and Moore added three apiece.
