Monarchs Produce Strong Showing at Vince Brown Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.  The Methodist men's and women's track and field teams were able to compete for the first time this semester on Sunday, participating in the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University.

TOP TRACK PERFORMANCES
  • Logan Wade and Tydrick Stewart took second and third in the men's 60-meter prelims out of 48 competitors, with Wade clocking a 6.93 and Stewart recording a 6.98. In the final, Stewart claimed third with a personal-record 6.97, while Wade's time of 6.99 earned him fourth.
  • In the women's 60-meter prelims, D'zariya Parran saw a new personal-best time of 8.19, finishing 10th out of 25 runners. Amariah Gibson was close behind in 12th with a time of 8.27.
  • Micah McCorvey qualified for the men's 60-meter hurdles final with a fourth-place time of 8.94 in the prelims. He ran nine seconds flat in the final to take sixth place.
  • In the women's 200-meter, the Monarchs claimed three spots in the top 10 out of 30 sprinters. Treazure Rosario Watson took fifth (27.08), Gibson finished eighth (27.66) and Leilani Rankin captured ninth (27.72). Rosario Watson and Rankin also excelled in the women's 400-meter, earning fourth and fifth respectively with times of 1:01.81 and 1:01.96.
  • In his first collegiate competition, Greg Cuthbertson was Methodist's top finisher in the men's 200-meter, taking 13rd out of 39 runners with a time of 23.74 seconds. In the men's 400-meter, Richard Schieferstein (53.05) and Vondre Nelson (54.92) earned top-10 finishes, taking sixth and 10th respectively.
TOP FIELD PERFORMANCES
  • Kamren Jenkins made a statement in both of his field competitions, taking first in the men's triple jump and second in the men's long jump. He leapt a distance of 13.61 meters in the triple jump and 6.50 meters in the long jump. David Dennis was the next best Monarch in the triple jump, claiming fourth with a jump of 12.59 meters, while Jarius Fajardo captured fourth place in the long jump with a mark of 6.40 meters.
  • Kaleb Nelson stepped up in the men's shot put with a long throw of 12.42 meters, which was good enough for fifth out of 27 throwers. He was also the top Monarch in the weight throw with a ninth-place toss of 11.97 meters. Both marks were personal bests for the freshman.
  • Laila Johnson was Methodist's top thrower in the women's shot put, producing a 10th-place mark of 8.66 meters.
