Monarchs Handle Hornets For Ninth Non-Conference Win

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist women's tennis team rebounded from Wednesday's conference loss to North Carolina Wesleyan University with a non-conference win over the University of Lynchburg on Thursday afternoon. The Monarchs defeated the Hornets by a score of 5–2 for their ninth win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist took two out of three matches in the doubles round to claim the first point of the match. Katie Sechrist and Wilette Rivera Morales were first to claim a win, defeating the opposition 6–2 in the No. 3 doubles match. Next was Emma Hulicki and Shea Bieniek, who battled the No. 1 duo for Lynchburg on their way to a 6–3 win at the top spot. Falling 6–3 after a hard-fought match in No. 2 doubles were Helen Hofmann and Caitlin Tihanovich.
  • Hulicki made quick work of her singles opponent, winning the No. 1 match with sets of 6–2 and 6–1. Behind her was Bienick, who won her first set 7–6 (7–3) before handling business with a 6–1 second-set win.
  • Tihanovich and Hofmann both played competitive matches at the No. 3 and No. 2 spots respectively, ultimately falling to their Lynchburg challengers. Tihanovich dropped the first set 6–4, then suffered a 7–6 (7–5) defeat in the following set. Hofmann fell 6–3 in the first before producing a 6–2 win in the second set, but she was narrowly beaten in the third set, 7–6 (8–6).
  • Sechrist and Addison Haden rounded out the match with two more wins for Methodist, with Sechrist earning winning 6–1, 6–4 and Haden winning 6–2, 6–4.

The Monarchs compete on Saturday, traveling to Winston-Salem to take on Salem College at 2 p.m.
