GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Monarchs had a chance to tie the game with just over three minutes to play, but a fumbled snap gave Guilford the ball back. The Quakers ran the clock out for the 34-33 win. Methodist moves to 1-1 while Guilford improves to 2-0 on the season.
The Monarchs scored first when senior
Antonio Bartee returned an interception for a 14-yard touchdown. The two-point play failed, but Methodist took the 6-0 lead with 4:42 to go in the first quarter.
Guilford opened the second quarter with a 67-yard touchdown on the punt return. The extra point gave Guilford the 7-6 lead. The Monarchs came back down the field for junior quarterback
Erik Teague threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to sophomore #Brian Hopkins". Teague's attempt for two came up short, but Methodist held the 12-7 lead. Just before halftime, Guilford used an 81-yard drive to retake the lead at 13-12. A two-point attempt fell short, but the Quakers took the one point lead into the locker room at halftime.
Early in the third quarter, Guilford turned the ball over on downs allowing Teague to break free for a 43-yard run reaching the Guilford 13-yard line. Sophomore
Corey McGuire finished the drive with a 13-yard touchdown run. Senior
Jared Boyles caught the pass for the two-point conversion to give Methodist a 20-13 lead with 11:02 to go in the third period.
The Quakers came back on three straight touchdowns from quarterback Josh Vogelbach finding receivers in the end zone. Guilford held the 34-20 lead with 10:21 to go in the fourth quarter. The Monarchs came right back and scored a touchdown on Teague's quarterback sneak. Sophomore
Mario Miralles kicked the extra point to move within seven with 6:03 to go in the game.
Freshman
Kevin Jordan forced a Guilford fumble and junior
Anthony Cassone recovered the ball to give it back to Methodist and Teague found sophomore #B.J. Parrish# for the nine-yard touchdown with just over three minutes to go. The Monarchs looked to tie the game at 34 with the extra point, but the play went awry, giving the ball back to the Quakers. Guilford ran the clock out to take the 34-33 win over the Monarchs.
Teague finished with 98 yards rushing to go along with 18-29 in passing for 169 yards. He finished with three touchdowns for Methodist. Junior
Chris Peoples led the receivers with seven receptions on the day for 67 yards.
Sophomore
Troy Glover and freshman
Mike McMillan each had eight tackles to lead the Methodist defense.
The Monarchs have an open week Sept. 20 but will travel to N.C. Wesleyan Sept. 27.
