FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist women's tennis battled North Carolina Central on Friday afternoon falling 5-2 to the Eagles.
The Monarchs followed the Division I scoring format with North Carolina Central earning a point for winning two of the three doubles matches.
Dana Powell and
Lindsey Davis gave the Monarchs a boost with a 9-7 win at number two doubles while
Kaitlin Flaherty and
Shannon Vivian lost 9-8 in a tiebreaker at number one and
Heather Brayton and
Sara Altman lost 9-7 at number three.
N.C. Central won four of the six singles matches to secure the 5-2 win. Vivian lost 6-1, 6-4 at number two and Davis lost 6-1, 6-2 at number three. Brayton lost 6-4, 6-2 at number five and Altman fell 7-5, 6-1 at number six. Powell won the first singles match for the Monarchs 6-3, 7-6. Flaherty won the first set 6-3 but lost the second 4-6 sending the match to a tiebreaker. It was tied 2-2 before Flaherty won seven straight points and finished off with the 10-3 win.
Methodist will host Averett Saturday at noon in a USA South match.
