FAYETTEVILLE, NC -  Susan Martin claimed her second straight individual National Championship last month and helped the women's golf team to their 12th consecutive title. Based on her success this past year, Martin has been selected to receive the Mason Sykes Cup for the second year in a row.

The Sykes Cup, named after former Methodist coach and current employee Mason Sykes, is awarded to the top athlete of the year.  Based on outstanding athletic achievement, a minimum 2.0 grade point average and good character, the Methodist coaching staff selects an annual winner.

Martin recently finished her junior year earning Honorable Mention All-American honors from the National Golf Coaches Association. A native of Norcross, Ga., she averaged 80.2 strokes this year before earning a nomination for the Honda Female Division III Athlete of the Year. With a cumulative grade point average of 3.69, Martin was also named a Methodist Scholar Athlete and a USA South Academic All-Conference honoree.

The Sykes Cup will be presented at the fall convocation ceremony.
