FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -
Ashlynn Chavis has been selected as the 2011-12 Mason Sykes Cup award winner after another outstanding year on the track.
The Sykes Cup, named after former Methodist coach and current employee Mason Sykes, is awarded to the top athlete of the year. Based on outstanding athletic achievement, a minimum 2.0 grade point average and good character, the Methodist coaching staff has selected an annual winner since 1986.
Chavis won three NCAA Division III National Championships this year including the indoor 60 meters, outdoor 100 meters and 4x100 meter relay. She also finished second in the long jump during both indoor and outdoor. The senior won four conference championships and helped the women's team to their second consecutive Mason Dixon Outdoor Conference title. During the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Chavis broke the 100 meter record and combined with teammates to break the 4x100 meter record as well. She holds six top-10 performances in Division III and was named the Methodist Senior Female Athlete of the Year earlier this spring.
The Sykes Cup will be presented at the fall convocation ceremony on Sept. 10 at 11 a.m. in Reeves Auditorium.
