Matt Layden scored five goals and added four assists as the Methodist men's lacrosse team won its first-ever game, 23-3, over Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon.

The Monarchs jumped on the board with six first-quarter goals, including the first goal in program history from
Chris Lombardi at the 13:08 mark.
Ben Click scored unassisted at the 10:22 mark of the first quarter for a 2-0 lead, and
Matt Layden scored off a feed from
Sean Mayefskie with 8:40 on the clock to make it 3-0.

It only took 39 seconds for MU (1-0) to take a 4-0 lead as Mayefskie took a pass from
Matt Layden and beat Tyler Cox for his first collegiate goal.
Matt Layden found his brother Justin for a tally at the 7:08 mark and
Matt Layden scored unassisted at the 5:47 mark to cap the scoring in the opening period.

The Monarchs extended their lead to 12-0 with 2:46 left in the half, including a pair of goals from
Chris Lombardi, before SVU (0-3) got on the board at the 2:02 mark on an unassisted goal by Nash Wilkey. However, the Monarchs received goals from
Jake Smerka and Trevor Dickinsonto take a14-1 lead into the break.

Methodist added five goals in the third quarter, including two more from
Matt Layden to make it a 20-1 contest heading into the final period. Methodist surrendered a pair of goals in the fourth quarter while scoring four itself and cruised to the first win in program history.

The Monarchs outshot SVU, 35-12, and picked up 47 ground balls to just 27 for the Knights. MU also won 21-of-30 faceoffs (.700) and converted 3-of-5 extra-man opportunities.

In all, 11 different Monarchs scored in their first game. Dickinson added four goals, Lombardi finished with three goals and an assist, and
Justin Layden had a pair of goals and three assists.
Justin Layden also picked up a team-best six ground balls, and
Matt Layden added five. In the faceoff X,
Seth Corbin won 5-of-8 draws,
Hayden Barzditis was 5-of-9,
Jordan DeSalvo was 5-of-7 and
Jonah Gillens was a perfect 4-of-4.
Travis Rice started in goal and picked up the win playing the entire first half. He allowed one goal and made one save.
Carl Leibrandt played the second half, allowing two goals and making three saves.

For Southern Virginia, Wilkey finished with a pair of goals and three ground balls. Mike Bangerter scored once and also added three ground balls. Joshua Neilson had three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
