Greensboro Men's Lacrosse Upends Methodist, 20-8

Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro College used a 12-1 scoring run that spanned halftime time to pull away from the Methodist men's lacrosse team en route to a 20-8 win on Wednesday afternoon.
 
After Justin Layden pulled the Monarchs (1-1) within one goal (3-2) of the host Pride (1-3), GC scored 12 of the game's next 13 goals to take a 15-3 lead by the 12:54 mark of the third quarter. Four different Greensboro players scored in succession to give the Pride a 7-2 lead with 2:29 to play in the first quarter. MU's Sean Mayefskie briefly halted the run with an unassisted goal at the 1:19 mark to make it 7-3, but five unanswered goals in the second period helped the Pride take a 13-3 lead into halftime.
 
Greensboro extended its lead to 15-3 in the third quarter before Jacob Fitch scored unassisted to make it a 15-4 game, but the Monarchs could not pull any closer despite three fourth-quarter goals, two by Chris Lombardi.
 
Greensboro held a slim 39-33 lead in shots, but dominated the faceoff X, winning 19-of-32 draws, while scooping up 56 groundballs to just 37 for Methodist. The Pride was also 13-of-17 on clear opportunities and MU was 13-of-22.
 
Jesse Duczeminsky picked up the win in the cage for GC, allowing four goals and making six saves. Travis Rice started in goal for MU and took the loss. He allowed 13 goals with five saves in playing the opening 30:00. Carl Leibrandt played the second half and allowed seven goals with four saves.
 
Lombardi led U with four points on three goals and one assist. Justin Layden had a goal and an assist to go with four groundballs and three caused turnovers. Jordan DeSalvo was 7-for-14 on faceoffs and had four groundballs. Jake Smerka added a goal, three groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers.
 
For Greensboro, Ryan Kissner (3g, 1a), Brodie Ceperich (3g, 1a), Jaegar Carlyle (4a), and Dennis Radcliffe (2g, 2a) all had four points. Gianni Gonzalez was 8-for-13 on draws, and Carlyle had a team-best seven groundballs.
 
The Monarchs are back in action on Saturday when they host Randolph at 3:30 pm.
