Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist men's lacrosse team won 17-of-21 faceoffs, and took nearly twice as many shots as Calvin in a 13-6 win over the Knights on Saturday afternoon at Monarch Stadium.

The Monarchs finished the game with 43 shots and limited Calvin to just 26 attempts, in part, due to their dominance in the faceoff X. Led by a perfect 10-for-10 mark by
Hayden Barzditis, MU (3-4) won all 12 faceoffs in the second and third quarters, and turned a 3-2 lead into a 12-4 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Trevor Dickinson and
Justin Layden started the scoring for MU with unassisted goals at 11:12 and 10:40 of the second quarter, respectively, for a 5-2 lead. After Jonathon VanderLaan made it a 5-3 game with an unassisted goal for Calvin (2-4),
Justin Layden added back-to-back unassisted tallies to push MU's lead out to 7-3 with 3:25 left in the opening half.

Seth Corbin then found Dickinson for a goal at the 1:54 mark that made it 8-3. Twenty-four seconds later,
Matt Layden found
Chris Lombardi open for a goal that made it 9-3, and the duo needed just eight seconds to hook up once again for a 10-3 advantage by the 1:22 mark.

Calvin's Tim Marco capped the first-half scoring with an unassisted goal with 10 seconds to play that gave MU a 10-4 lead at the break.

In the third quarter,
Matt Layden found Dickinson for a goal 10 seconds in to make it 11-4 in favor of MU, and
Jake Smerka then fed
Matt Layden to make it 12-4 at the 13:10 mark.
Justin Layden's goal at 9:32 of the fourth quarter gave MU its largest lead of the day (13-4), and Marco and Chris Griffin scored down the stretch for Calvin for the 13-6 final score.

Defensively, the Monarchs held Calvin to 0-of-6 on man-up opportunities, and the Monarchs picked up 55 ground balls to just 34 for the Knights. Carl Liebrandt started in goal for MU and picked up his second win of the season. He played the first half and made three saves against four goals allowed.
Travis Rice played the final 30:00 and stopped six shots while allowing a pair of goals. Casey Harless played all 60:00 for Calvin and made 11 saves in the loss.

Matt Layden finished with a team-high six points on two goals and four assists. Dickinson (3g, 1a) and
Justin Layden (4g) each had four points.
Jaylen Robinson picked up a team-best six ground balls, and
Justin Layden,
Daniel Richards and Barzditis each had five ground balls. Richards and
Kyle Peacock each caused three turnovers.

For Calvin, Marco finished with four points on three goals and an assist, and Griffin scored twice. Harless had a team-high eight ground balls. Tyler DeKryger had seven ground balls and a team-best three caused turnovers.

Methodist will now take to the road to play at Christopher Newport on Wednesday at 5:30.
